Be sure you tread the right side of the law: worn or damaged tyres put lives at risk
The tyres on your car are the only part of the vehicle in contact with the road. Therefore, whatever vehicle you’re driving the condition of your tyres matters. Morally and most especially legally.
Under UK law you’re required to have the right size and type of tyre for:
- The type of vehicle you’re driving
- The purpose of the vehicle.
What that means in practice is this: Having the correct tyres fitted and inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure.
The minimum depth of tread the law allows on your tyres is 1.6 millimetres across the central ¾ of the tread around the tyre’s complete circumference.
For safety reasons, it makes sense to replace your tyres before they reach the legal limit. A number of vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing when the tyre is at 3 millimetres. Note that in wet weather, a tyre at 1.6 millimetres needs 8 metres – or an extra two car lengths to stop at 50mph than it would if the tread was 3 millimetres.
Frequent checking of your tyres can help you to avoid 3 penalty points on your licence and £2,500 in fines. It can also save lives: yours and other people’s.
